The Beast Black Dagger Brotherhood JR Ward 9780451475169 Books

I love vampire romances, and I think the Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of the best vampire romance series around. This book wasn't one of my favorites. Book 2, the original Rhage & Mary story, wasn't a favorite either. I love Rhage, and I love the beast. He's handsome and strong and sweet and loyal. But I don't find Mary very compelling. She's just too bland for me. When she was originally introduced into the series, she was plain and directionless and too mild-mannered for me. And she hasn't changed much over the years. This book felt like one long social commentary on the joys of adoption, which I'm in favor of but isn't particularly romantic. I liked the side-story about Jo because it reminds me a bit of Beth's story, so I'm looking forward to Jo's book. I found the side story about Assail more appealing than in earlier books. This book barely held my interest. I hope for better next time.

The Beast Black Dagger Brotherhood JR Ward 9780451475169 Books Reviews

JR Ward deserves 6 stars for this one. WOW WOW WOW.

I think the best thing about this one was how tight she kept the storytelling--we weren't bombarded with 20 pov's and the ones we saw were richly developed. And so it was so much easier to connect with Assail, to feel Rhage and Mary's desire to adopt Bitty growing with every tuned page, to feel the sad, star-crossed connection between Layla and Xcor even if they never spoke.

Rhage/Mary-JR Ward hit the perfect note with Rhage in terms of the jokester, the Beast, the guy who is devoted to his Mary, and now the man who is ready to be a father. Like some of the other Brothers, I didn't think their "book" really made me fall in love with the characters as much as other moments in the series did. This second focus on them really changed that.

Vishous-It seems like Vishous is always one of Ward's favorites, whereas others (Phury particularly, but also Rehvenge, Tohr) never get the spotlight or even show up with more than a mention. Hopefully that eventually evens out more, much as I like Vishous. Anyway, here he's super both in his mommy issues with the Scribe Virgin, his stiffness with Jane, and in the awesome scenes with Assail in particular.

Assail-Huge secondary story arc that was masterfully pulled off by Ward. His slow turn around from moral-less drug lord to tortured soul to the moment he finds the blood slave and the true fiber of his character is revealed was exquisitely done. The phone call to Sola, his decision to get help and the way the book ends have me very much hoping Assail/Sola will be the couple featured in the next book. I LOVE the idea of Assail having to tell Sola he's a vampire and how all of that will fall out, since at this point, she still doesn't know.

Layla/Xcor-On the one hand, I'm thrilled with the fact that both twins lived (and love the names.) There's just this teensy niggling frustration that why does Payne pull out the magical healing abilities *sometimes* for a premature baby, but Selena was allowed to die? Why does she save the babies twice, in fact? It just seems a little too convenient. I really would have wished they just take that part out and have Payne's intervention not be needed, rather than have what seems like big plot loopholes. Loved the connection she has with Xcor the entire time. Itching for how the brotherhood will find out she's connected with him. And I had been wondering if Tohr was the one Xcor was related to so squealed when that part came up since that will create HUGE drama down the road.

Bitty-adored her.

Those investigating humans-didn't get very attached to anyone. Will try harder on reread now that I know one is Manny's sibling.

Lassiter is growing on me. But what are they supposed to do without the Scribe Virgin? Can a deity just up and disappear herself? And who will this successor be? (Cowers at the thought of Lassiter.)
SPOILERS INCLUDED
I rarely write reviews though I'm an avid reader. I've been with the BDB since the beginning and have enjoyed many re-reads. The reason for the rating for this book is due to the secondary stories. They were far more interesting. As much as I enjoy the BDB series, I do not enjoy, what I call, repeat books. I don't like waiting a year for a book about a couple that already has a book. This story could have EASILY been a secondary story, for example to Lassiter's book.

THE BEAST
So, aside from being annoyed that rhage and mary got ANOTHER book, the story seemed forced to me. Rhage is suffering from these bizarre panic attacks that ultimately have created distance between him and Mary. Mary is trying to get through to a recently orphaned girl at Safe Place and is frustrated that she's not really making any progress. They eventually talk and air their personal struggles and realize they want a kid. Surprise! The kid they want is the orphan. That's what THE BEAST is about. Smh. The story just dragged to me. It did not take me long to KNOW what the end was going to be. Yeah, they get the kid and now they have a family. With the title being THE BEAST, you'd think beastie would make more than TWO physical appearances. I don't know, maybe it's me expecting too much from Ward, but this story felt like she was trying to create an unnecessary story for a favorite character. (Not mine but I think I'm in the minority)

The side stories....
I originally was not a fan of layla and xcor's story. In preparation for THE BEAST, I did a re-read and was captivated by their tragic, forbidden love. It reeked of untapped passion. I'm thoroughly excited that their story is next in THE CHOSEN. I'm glad her and her young survived what felt like a 2-3 year pregnancy.

Again, I originally did not like Assail and Marisol's story, but found myself looking forward to reading more. Although sola isn't really present in this book, Assail's part in this book was highly entertaining. I'm totally rooting on him to "get" Throe. Throe's confusion about his attraction to him was surprisingly erotic. I hope that after Assail detoxes we see Sola back in his life.

The "human" Jo was only interesting because she's the unknown sister of Manny. I'm sure the warden will somehow incorporate her into the BDB's world since Vishous (who is my #1 favorite) got a vibe from her. I don't know who her love interest will be, maybe one of the BASTARDS.

So the Scribe Virgin is "dead" and will appoint a successor at a later date. Why is she gone? How will she appoint a replacement? This was confusing to me. Especially since the Omega is definitely NOT gone. I thought they were all about balance. I'm sure Ward will give an explanation of sorts but for now me and the BDB were left scratching our heads.

In conclusion, this is the 1st book in the series I don't see me re-reading multiple times. It was forgettable and I don't think it deserved 508 pages. It wasn't horribly written be any means, it just felt unnecessary. I can understand from an author's POV that they have to create stories to keep their fans engaged, but that's what introducing new characters are for. Or at least give EVERY character a book (seriously can my boy LASSITER please get a d*mn book already) before revisiting old favorites.

My apologies for the all over the place review and for any grammar or spelling errors. I didn't want to give ALL the spoilers away but I did want to touch on what I enjoyed. This book did NOT turn me away from the series but I could have lived without it.
