Passion that takes no prisoners, and love that tests the limits of ecstasy.

Fenn Lockwood comes alive in the shadows. Though he might have physically survived the kidnapping that stole his childhood, the trauma and pain he lived through have marked him forever. Now the only place where Fenn can be himself is within the walls of his private BDSM world - a place of erotic obsession, where desire isn't just captured...it's bound.

Hayden Thorne knows that behind Fenn's hardened exterior is a man worth fighting for. Yet to save him from the past that still haunts him, Hayden will have to abandon every inhibition she's ever had and venture into Fenn's intoxicatingly sensual world. Each tantalizing second she spends in Fenn's searing embrace is more delicious than the last, and soon Hayden begins to think that she may never want to leave such torturous bliss.

The Gilded Cage Surrender Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Lauren Smith Veronica Den Hachette Audio Books

This is the second book in the Surrender series that can be read as a stand-alone. The author provided enough information about the previous background storyline but I think that the reading was enhanced by my having read The Gilded Cuff where we learn of everything Emery went through. Emery and Fenn are twins, mirror images of each other, torn apart when they were eight years of age.

The professional opposite of his twin who he doesn’t remember, Fenn Lockwood is a bull-riding cowboy living and working in Colorado under the surname of Smith. Throughout his life he’s had odd sensations that he hasn’t understood, sometimes mental images and strange thoughts. When he has an episode on a bull-ride that causes him to be thrown his life is saved by a sexy gorgeous red-head whose reason for being in Colorado is to tell him of his history and bring him home.

Just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean that Hayden Thorne wants to just be a rich man’s wife. In an attempt to gain approval from her parents she heads to Colorado to warn the missing twin that his life’s in danger and bring him home. She’s gutsy, sassy, and smart, capable of more than she’s been allowed to do because of her family name. She didn’t expect the lightning bolt that ran through her when her eyes connected with Fenn’s across the ring having never responded that way to his twin. When he’s tossed by the bull without thinking she jumps into the ring to distract the dangerous animal so that others can help him.

These twins are so intriguing. Having suffered from the kidnapping that parted them though they grew up apart in ways they are similar. Emery believing his brother dead kept what really happened to himself while Fenn injured the night they were separated blocked the memories of his previous life and hid the occasional odd feelings. Both are men with strong dominant personalities protective of those that they care for. What Fenn dealt with upon learning of his past was realistic from the feelings of skepticism and denial to acceptance of what he knew deep inside was the truth. He had to come to terms with how the life that he’s known was a lie. It’s with Hayden’s support that Fenn realizes that though the facts of his life that he’d believed were untrue the man that he is doesn’t change with that knowledge.

Hayden was the perfect woman for Fenn, strong yet submissive to the right man, a man who could appreciate what she’s capable of and would never restrain her outside of the bedroom. The attraction between Fenn and Hayden was intense, the sex scenes steamy but their connection was much deeper than lust; they found what they had been missing in their lives in each other.

I loved this story as much as the first one, it was a great sexy and emotion filled romance amid mystery and suspense with more plot twists continued to a satisfying conclusion. The suspense heightened the romance. I think back to the stormy night the two protagonists spent on the rock ledge and how in their almost shared tragedy their souls were comforted and the level of trust in those moments was palpable and what made them survive. I read this book in one sitting as I could not put it down.

The Gilded Cage Surrender Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Lauren Smith Veronica Den Hachette Audio Books Reviews

When I got to the end of Gilded Cuff I found myself anxious to read the next book in the series and now I finally have. Gilded Cage by Lauren Smith is the second book in the Surrender series and it gives us a look into Fenn’s side of the story. I had already grown to know and love Emory and Sophie, so getting this chance to learn more about them and learn about Emory’s twin brother Fenn was spectacular. I particularly loved the fact that Fenn was not just a carbon copy of his brother Emory. While they certainly had their similarities like twins often do, they were definitely their own people which was great to see. I liked the fact that he was comfortable in his more simple life in Colorado but still wanted the opportunity to get to know his family back home. The romantic scenes between him and Hayden were quite steamy as well. I hope to read more about this group of characters as they are deep and easy to grow to care for.
Mmm… If I had to describe this book in a single word that would be the one… Mmm… It is very unusual to find any erotic fiction that is well-written, let alone anything as masterful as The Gilded Cage. I loved the sex and the sexual tension, but I was also enthralled by the story itself, the mystery and the danger. The author did a fantastic job at a BDSM world that actually feels realistic and it is fantastic to see an erotic novel where the female isn’t a complete idiot.

This is the first book in the series that I have read (and I realized afterwards that I was reading them out of order), however, that honestly doesn’t detract from the read. The author does a good job of providing enough background to make the story flow without being overbearing about it. I have read one other book by this author (it was The Duelist’s Seduction) and I loved it too. Lauren Smith does a great job at the genre and creates both characters and situations that are engaging and a joy to read.
This is far from my usual fare, and this sort of writing is a somewhat new area for my tastes. I can certainly see the skill in the writing, and I must admit that Smith does a wonderful job of capturing real human emotion within what many (I myself included, until recently), might consider low-grade writing, or even "smut". This is far from it, proving that erotic literature is not only worth praising, but worth writing, and for someone who will always try something once, I hope that more writers give it a shot someday. I'm sure it can be a wonderful release. As for Smith's latest release (I read the first one too), this one takes a more psychological approach to the whole culture, looking more in on Fenn's underlying motivations and struggles that have made him into the man he is. He is capable of love, in his own way, and his relationship with Hayden is unique and memorable. There were a few moments where even my Puritan side appeared, but generally, this was a classy and wildly insightful journey into a lifestyle that has strangely come to the forefront of popular culture, but hasn't yet been fully understood by many people - particularly readers. Round of Applause for opening people's eyes in such a well-written way.
